چکیده

In Electronic Orientation Aids, the guidance process consists in two steps: first, identify the location of a visually impaired user along the expected trajectory, and second, provide her/him with appropriate instructions on directions to follow, and pertinent information about the surroundings. In urban environment, positioning accuracy is not always optimal and tracking the user’s progress along the expected itinerary is often challenging. We present three new waypoint-based validation strategies to track the user’s location despite low positioning accuracy. These strategies are evaluated within SIMU4NAV, a multimodal virtual environment subserving the design of Electronic Orientation Aids for visually impaired people. Results show that the proposed strategies are more robust to positioning inaccuracies, and hence more efficient to guide users.

Refined Route Instructions Using Topological Stages of Closeness

In pedestrian navigation, navigators are free to choose any passable way. Because of this characteristic, accurate route instructions are important when navigating from waypoint to waypoint. In this paper, a theoretical framework is described for dealing with position uncertainty in pedestrian guiding systems. Stages of closeness are defined based on the topological relation between the navigat...

Tactile Wayfinder: Comparison of Tactile Waypoint Navigation with Commercial Pedestrian Navigation Systems

In this paper we report on a field study comparing a commercial pedestrian navigation system to a tactile navigation system called Tactile Wayfinder. Similar to previous approaches the Tactile Wayfinder uses a tactile torso display to present the directions of a route’s waypoints to the user. It advances those approaches by conveying the location of the next two waypoints rather than the next o...

A Mobile-Cloud Pedestrian Crossing Guide for the Blind

The ability to detect the status of pedestrian signals at street intersections is a critical aspect of safe outdoor navigation for the blind and visually-impaired, especially in unfamiliar environments. Existing outdoor navigation devices for the blind prove insufficient in providing such guidance due to their reliance on limited mobile computational resources. In this work, we propose a mobile...

GPS Waypoint Navigation via Head Mounted Vibrotactor

The purpose of this project was to create a mode of pedestrian navigation via a single head mounted vibrotactor. Our intention was to achieve accurate waypoint navigation with fewer tactors than in previous works, thereby introducing a simpler system and increasing cost effectiveness. Test results concluded that average walking speeds through our course were similar when given verbal direction ...

Wearable RGBD Indoor Navigation System for the Blind

In this paper, we present a novel wearable RGBD camera based navigation system for the visually impaired. The system is composed of a smartphone user interface, a glass-mounted RGBD camera device, a real-time navigation algorithm, and haptic feedback system. A smartphone interface provides an effective way to communicate to the system using audio and haptic feedback. In order to extract orienta...
